First let me say i love the site. second, is there any way someone could put a little progression guide for leatherworking for like rank 5-20? I just need a little help and all i can find is rank 1-5 which is pretty much useless for me since doing the leves will get that in a short amount of time.

Anyway a guide for 5-20 would be amazing. thanks =)

Well I'm doing leatherworking and all my free time is in FFXIV right now, this is 1st time I'm actually going through these forums since release.

As for leatherworking there isnt anything like a set guide to burn through easiest to get materials. You are going to be crafting sheepskins pretty much until 15ish thats when you can start making some dodo-skin stuff. so just buy sheep skins anywhere you can find, seek them on bazaar, shout, do whatever it takes. With new inflow of people coming today materials should become a lot more abundant so that is a plus. Rat/squirrel/marmot pelts you can craft but they are only used for sub-parts in a couple pain in the ass to make leather armors and also useful in clothcraft armor. If you have acid and alumin you can craft them just for skill ups and either stockpile it or NPC them.

Gathering skins in leathercraft is not like other crafts where you can just go and harvest stuff, you get it only from other people farming stuff. So whatever leather you are working with you should be buying as much of next tier leather as you can so when you get to it you have stacks of skins to work with.

As for what to craft just make any pieces of armor that you can sell for profit from scratch and you will level up. Here are some just of the top of my head.

Harness
Culottes
Vambraces
Armguards
Mitts
Fingerless Gloves
Sublgar (If you can get dyed cloth somewhere)
Leggings

use Loadstone receppie list for most accuracy it also seems to arrange recepies in tiers of 10 from easiest at top and harder going down to know aproximate item level to craft, nobody knows for sure yet. Use plathora of other databases to see what items have good stats that you can make for $$$

Right now I am lvl 20 Leathercraft and can do dodoskin stuff pretty easily, but Buffalo stuff is a no go. Probably need another 3 levels or so. Also get as much crafting gear as you can and a better weapon, helps tremendously.
